Downland Village Cup: Winners

The run to the cup win started against our old foes Lavant and after choosing to bat first we scored a respectable 146 for 5. Tom Lightfoot led the way with an excellent 44 and he was ably supported by Rew with 18, James 17, Mark 15 and Wayne 15 not out. Lavant were always up against it and were struggling against the bowling of Matt (3 for 32) and Ben (2 for 11). However, after we seemed to ease off the throttle, Lavant gave us a bit of a scare and found themselves wanting 11 off the last over albeit with just one wicket in hand. That wicket was duly taken via a run out and we had won by 9 runs.

The semi final pitted us against a Burpham side that had won the competition three times over the past five years. After an abandonment due to rain, the re-arranged match finally took place on a Wednesday evening. A superb all round team effort in the field saw us restrict them to 152 for 8 but the hero was Miles as he took the prized wicket of Gareth Challen with his slow drifters. He was not a happy man and we took full advantage with Rew and Ben both claiming two wickets apiece. However we still had a significant hill to climb to make the final as knocking off that many runs is no mean feat but after Tom fell for 9, the trio of James (41), Ben (71 not out) and Rew (18 not out) were in awesome form with the bat and we strolled to a fantastic win by 8 wickets with 10 balls in hand. It was thrilling to watch with Benno rolling back the years and threatening the dwellings of the Singleton locals but Tom must still be feeling the effects of punching himself in the head all the way back to the pavilion!

The final was a memorable occasion and we lined up against the form team who had hammered all before them en route including a 100 plus run thrashing of Singleton. However we were right on our game from the off and excellent fielding and bowling restricted Tangmere’s normally fluent game extremely effectively. Wickets fell regularly and a great team effort saw Tangmere all out for just 82. It is hard to say who was the pick of the bowling but Kev, Ben and Rew took 2 wickets each whilst Manty was extremely economical going for just 9 runs off of three overs. There was a particularly good duel between Rew and ex Boxgrove player Craig Charlesworth. All that said each and every Boxgrove player on the field that night can feel proud of the part that they played. Chasing down a total of 82 was never going to cause too many problems once the excellent Tom Lightfoot (36 not out) and Ben Gottesman (28 not out) got going and we won at a canter by 9 wickets with 6 overs to spare.

So we lifted the cup for the third time and James can feel very proud of a skipper’s job well done. Tom Lightfoot was named man of the match in the final by the umpires and a good night was had by all.

Madehurst Twenty20: Finalists

Led by skipper Rew Reed an often under strength team performed admirably and once again were excellent in the field. The competition followed the same sequence as 2008 with a win against Arundel Castle (Rewby 44 and Ben 41 with the bat while Ben, Kev and Tom Lightfoot took 2 wickets each) and a defeat to the hosts (Rew 31and Wayne 17 not out and Kev and Matt 2 wickets apiece). That left us once again requiring a win against Lavant to qualify for the final. That game was a tense affair, especially as we had 9 players who only scored single figures, but a partnership of 62 between Mark and Gordon led us to a score of 108 and we then bowled them out for 62. Matt took an excellent 5 for 19 ably supported by Manty and Ninja who took 2 wickets each.

The Madehurst Twenty20 final started promisingly when another excellent display in the field restricted Madehurst to just 104. Kev and Ben took 3 wickets each and Manty, Kev and Rew one apiece. However our reply soon ran out of steam and despite our best efforts we ended on 80-9.

Awards for 2009

The batting trophy has changed hands again with this year’s winner in awesome form. He scored all 4 of the hundreds scored by the team and also passed 50 on another 5 occasions as he amassed a truly impressive 1,069 weekend runs at a Boxgrove record average of 97.2. Very many congratulations to skipper James Thorpe.

The bowling trophy took on a new angle this year as serial winner Simon Hall was injured for a long spell. Although it seems there were a record low amount of wickets taken for a season overall it did lead to an epic battle for the award that went right to the penultimate game. Ben Gottesman emerged victorious as his 13 wickets were taken at an average of 18.7. Paul Mant however took the season’s most weekend wickets with 16.

Ben Gottesman also wins the catching trophy with 8 catches in 10 games.

Two ducks won the award in 2007, then there was a glut last year with the winner needing 8 but for 2009 we were back to a low scoring contest (literally!) that went right to the wire. Going into the final game any one of 4 players could have won the duck award but Jim Reed stuck his head above the parapet and his bat out to dry and his golden in the penultimate over of the season meant he had three and the duck bat was his. Aiden Mant, Lewis Donnovan and Rew Reed (each with 2) let out a collective sigh of relief.
