Boxgrove took on Lavant for the return fixture on fine summers day.                                                                                                                                                      Boxgrove won the toss and Gottesman had no hesitation in putting Lavant in.

Mant and McGeough opened the bowling and kept the bowling tight. If chances had been taken Lavant could have been three wickets down, but McGeough finished wicketless (14 runs from 6 overs) and Mant did manage to bowl one of the openers and finished with 1-10 from 7 overs.

Langton replaced McGeough and Gottesman replaced Mant. Runs started to flow, although Gottesman removed the other opener. At 82-2 a big score looked on the cards for Lavant. However, Langton seemed to find his length and suddenly wickets began to fall. The impressive Langton took two in two balls and then Gottesman joined the party removing Elphick and Rawnsley, the latter for a duck. In between, Budgen ran out Portsmouth for 16, after a suicidal second run when Langton had the ball in his hands. Reed came on to replace Gottesman, but Langton continued from the other end and dismissed the last two batsman to finish with 5-41 and Lavant were all out for 118. Gottesman figures were 3 for 28.

After an early tea, Chamberlain and Reed opened the batting and the score ticked along, until Reed was given out LBW for 15. Bugden lasted a couple of overs before being bowled for 2, and Gottesman joined Chamberlain, who was continuing to add runs at a good rate. Gottesman was bowled for 28 but Boxgrove were in the ascendency and Langton’s day got even better as he was straight into the groove hitting a number of boundaries. Boxgrove reached the target winning by 7 wickets with Langton ending 28 not out and Chamberlain an assured 33 not out.
