Boxgrove CC

Welcome to the official Boxgrove Cricket Club website.

On a warm sunny Saturday Boxgrove entertained Lynchmere who seemed to
have
been caught out by the beautiful weather having left Haslemere
only 30
minutes earlier in the pouring rain. Still, we get the best
weather down
south! The pitch was very hard and shiny and it was clear
that the new ball
would be a tough one to face hence the toss was a
vital one. Holl was skippering in Gottesman's absence but lost the toss
and Boxgrove were
unsurprisingly asked to bat.

In terms of team news Boxgrove had
scraped together 10 players thanks
to Liam Glasspool turning out straight
from work. There was a return to
the side for Wayne Barrett and James Thorpe
but 5 of the players from
the previous week - Vinnicombe, Gottesman, Bugden,
Samways and Williams
- missed out.

The first over from
Lynchmere's Simon Cain showed what was in store as
the first two balls
reared up alarmingly at Barrett who was opening the
batting for Boxgrove. He
was clearly rattled and as a result only
managed to spoon his third delivery
straight to mid off and he was
caught for a duck. That brought Mark Holl to
the wicket and he and
Chamberlain set about re-building the innings.
Chamberlain was trying
to get off the mark for some 8 overs before the
opportunity came and he
took a fair few balls in the chest and back in the
Boxgrove cause. Holl
was looking in good form and together with Chamberlain
he saw off the
early danger. With the score and the partnership on 87,
Chamberlain was
caught expertly in the deep by Cain for a brave 27. James
Thorpe was
next in and he wasted no time in hitting a succession of
boundaries and
then working well with Holl in running the singles.

Holl passed his fifty and the partnership (40) with Thorpe was
looking
very fruitful as they began to eye a total in the region of 200.

However, just when he was looking well set, Thorpe was caught

brilliantly at deep cover by Cain off Charman for 22. McGeough kept up

the momentum by hitting some lusty blows and Holl was still going
strong
until he was finally caught behind off the final ball of the
penultimate
over for a fluent 76. McGeough soon followed run out for 15
and Glasspool
and Tremmell saw out the last over as Boxgrove finished
on a competitive 169
for 5.

Lynchmere knew that they would have to bat well to win and
they got off
to a great start as Thow and Adam Hedges rattled up 44 in no
time.
Skipper Holl called upon spinner Thorpe (5 overs no maidens 2 for 15)

who duly removed Hedges, bowled for 29. He then followed that up by

having the hard hitting Ed Spencer caught behind by Holl for a rapid

fire 28. Lynchmere were well set however on 97 for 2 when Wayne Barrett

(7 overs no maidens 1 for 39) joined the party, producing a stunning

ball to account for Thow who had made a painstaking 19. At this stage

the game was very much in the balance and when Chamberlain (7 overs no

maidens 1 for 27) removed Tyler, caught well by McGeough for 9,
Boxgrove
fancied their chances. They didn't account for Charman though
who looked
solid and assured as he moved Lynchmere towards their
victory
target.

Holl turned to his opening bowlers again who upped their
game to put
Lynchmere under pressure. The excellent Mant was almost
unplayable but
it was McGeough who looked the part and claimed the important
wicket of
Ayres bowled for 18. Charman however ploughed on and when two good

chances went down Boxgrove knew that their goose was cooked. In the end

Lynchmere reached their target with an over to spare but it had been an

excellent game where the result had been in doubt throughout the match

and that is all you can really ask for, especially with so many players

out of the team.

Boxgrove 169 for 5 (Holl 76, Chamberlain 27,
Thorpe 22, McGeough 15)

Lynchmere 170 for 5 (Thorpe 2 for 15,
Chamberlain 1 for 27, McGeough 1
for 34, Barrett 1 for
39).
