On Sunday 15th May, Boxgrove went to
Parham
Park
with only 9 men. Unfortunately Mark Holl and skipper
James
Thorpe both broke fingers the previous day.
Parham batted first and Paul Mant and Rew Reed opened the
bowling. P Mant had an appeal for a caught behind turned down and the Parham
openers soon started to find gaps in the field and the runs started to flow.
Chamberlain and McGeough replaced the opening bowlers and wickets started to
fall. Chamberlin bowled one man behind his legs and then had another two caught
by Reed at mid-on. Meanwhile at the other end, McGeough was economical, but
finished without a wicket (0-13 from 7 overs). The opening bowlers returned and
wickets continued to fall.
At 118 for 5, aided by good catches from Aiden Mant and
Damien Langton, it looked like Parham may post a low total. However, Parham
soon started to find the inevitable gaps left by 9 men and whilst wickets
continued to fall, the runs continued to pile up. Parham finished on 192 for 8,
with Rew Reed claiming 3 wickets for 53 off 13 overs, Paul Mant 2 for 78 off 17
and Chamberlain 3 for 34 off 10. All in all Boxgrove had bowled 47 overs,
despite only having 4 bowlers.
The target looked challenging for Boxgrove, and was made
even harder when McGeough was caught behind second ball for 0. Vinnicombe and
Reed started to put together a partnership before Reed was caught at mid-off
for 4. Having been dropped by the same fielder, in the same position, a few
overs earlier, you would have thought he would know not play the same shot!! Chamberlain
joined Vinnicombe, and runs were difficult to come by. Eventually Vinnicombe
was bowled for 13 and the writing was on the wall. Martin Bishop stayed for a
while, but was bowled for 0, and D Langton was bowled next ball, and whilst Jim
Reed cut the hatrick ball for 4, he was out soon after. At the death Chamberlain
was joined by Aiden Mant who hit a couple of nice shots before backing away and
being bowled for 2. Paul Mant came in last but couldn’t hold off the inevitable
as he was caught for 1 leaving Chamberlain 7 not out. Boxgrove had mustered a
paltry 32 runs all out.
