On a cloudy but warm day Boxgrove played at Steyning. The ground once
again proved hard to find but we located it in plenty of time only to
find the opposition ready and raring to go thinking it was a 2pm start.
Skipper Ben Gottesman went straight out to do the toss knowing that it
was a vital one to win given the early rain and a damp, drying pitch
and a long outfield. Alas the toss was lost, Boxgrove were duly
inserted and Benno was then informed that local rules would apply
including the match being restricted to 35 overs a side and batsmen
retiring at fifty. To say the local rules did not go down too well with
the Boxgrove players is an understatement but despite the moans and
groans the rules remained and the game began.

In terms of team news Boxgrove played with ten and welcomed back Tom
Vinnicombe, Doug Wyers and Steve Tremmell whilst there was a debut for
Richard Samways who then promptly tried to alienate his new team mates
by pulling on a Tangmere shirt and hat. Not a good idea.

Mark Holl and John Chamberlain opened for Boxgrove and came up against
two useful bowlers. Progress was slow but the important thing was that
there was no early fall of wicket. Chamberlain in particular took a
while to get going and after 10 overs the score was just 12 for none.
The long outfield was causing a problem with shots that would normally
be four going for just one. It was clear that the run rate needed to be
upped so Holl and Chamberlain opened their shoulders, chanced their arm
and moved the score on to 58 for 0 off of 21 overs. Chamberlain then
took a slash at one to many and was well caught behind for 22. That
brought Gottesman to the wicket who wasted no time at all in smashing a
number of big sixes and the score motored along. Having taken five
sixes off Bristow, Gottesman knew that he was getting near to having to
retire and when a single was taken he moved on to 49. A four followed
and as Gottesman departed he had put on 66 with Holl and had scored all
but 13 of the runs.

Upon Gottesman's retirement the score was 124 for 1 and Jake Bugden and
Holl then upped the game with the former in particular crunching a
number of fours before he was bowled for a very good 16. Vinnicombe was
next down the ramp and he and Holl rotated the strike well before
Vinnicombe was out off the last ball of the innings for 6. So the
innings closed on a very competitive 158 for 3 with Holl have batted
through, riding his luck at times, for 43 not out. Gottesman no doubt
felt particularly aggrieved to be stopped in mid flow en route to what
looked like being a very high score but for his premature retirement.

After tea Boxgrove were soon in the wickets with Mant having Tebbs LBW
for 2. Ninja Williams then accounted for Bristow brilliantly caught in
the deep by Gottesman for 1. Steyning were clearly in trouble but a
partnership of 70 between Thomsett and Buxton put them on course for a
win until Gottesman struck, having the former caught by Williams for
46. Brown then followed, bowled by Gottesman for 3 as the Steyning
reply stuttered once again. Chamberlain went off the pitch injured and
that gave Samways his first bowl for the club but he could not find the
right line and length and was replaced by the returning Mant (7 overs 3
maidens 1 for 10). Bugden (8 overs 2 maidens 1 for 27) was bowling well
at this stage and got his just reward when Gottesman caught Bone for 7.
Paul Mant then took an excellent catch to give Gottesman (8 overs 5
maidens 3 for 11) another wicket as Steyning finished on 117 for 6 to
give Boxgrove an excellent win by 41 runs.

So a win for Boxgrove with Ben Gottesman a man of the match candidate
but most importantly Steyning did us proud after the game with an
excellent spread back at the pub.
