On 1st May, Boxgrove went to Walberton for the
first Sunday game of the season. Unusually the sun was shining and the wicket
was not too damp. Yet having lost the toss Boxgrove were put into bat.
There were several new members in the team and Thorpe decided
on a new batting line up, with Ockwell and Barrett opening. The new opening
partnership put on a stand of 37 (many of them byes), before Ockwell was bowled
for an impressive 19. Debutant Harker then came in and looked good but when he
and Barrett were both out for 11 wickets then began to tumble. Damien Langton
picked up a duck and then his Uncle Matt followed first ball. Rew Reed watched
this from the other end but when trying to re-build the innings he was out for
12.
McGeough and Thorpe (batting in the unfamiliar position of
8) were now at the wicket and a lot depended on them if Boxgrove were to post a
decent total. The stand had reached 37 before Thorpe was caught of a ball which
reared up off a length. Mant then came in hit his first ball for 4 and was then
bowled. Jim Reed and T. Smith did not last long both getting ducks and Boxgrove
were all out for 117. Kev in McGeough finished not out on 19.
After tea, Mant and McGeough opened the bowling, and Langton
soon replaced McGeough (his batting exploits were obviously too much for him), and
Walberton wickets soon started to tumble.
Mant was replaced by Rew Reed who also started to take
wickets. Walberton were soon in tall kinds of trouble with an unlikely win for
Boxgrove becoming a real possibility. At 115 for 8, the tail end batsman lobbed
a simple dolly to Barrett who somehow managed to drop the ball without it
touching his hands. The chance was gone and batsman hit the winning runs in the
next over.
Langton finished with 6 for 32 off 13 overs and Rew Reed 2
for 36 off 8 overs. A close game which went down to the wire.
